Sénégal-Maroc : Les vérités de Mamadou Koumé, figure de la presse sportive
Invited on the RTS program "Point de Vue," Mamadou Koumé, an emblematic figure in Senegalese sports journalism and former director of the APS news agency, offered a clear-eyed analysis of Senegal's victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. According to this expert, the Lions' triumph was "entirely deserved" and beyond dispute from a technical standpoint. He noted that Senegal won six of their seven matches, proving that there were "no surprises," as the tournament's best team logically dominated from start to finish.
However, the former head of the APS acknowledges that the main question before the match concerned the referee's ability to "control the game" against the host nation. For him, the turning point came in stoppage time during a duel between Hakimi and Seck, an action he considers legitimate. He deplores a rushed whistle, recalling that with VAR, "referees should let play continue and then review the play." This incident, according to him, crystallized a toxic atmosphere. He insists that there was "a whole climate surrounding this final," marked by incidents with the ball boys, pressure on Édouard Mendy, and the suspected poisoning of three Senegalese players.
Regarding security, Mamadou Koumé regretted that the team's protection hadn't been reinforced, believing that "the essential thing was to ensure minimal security" upon their arrival in Rabat. Returning to the controversial penalty missed by Morocco, he offered an original analysis, suggesting that this decision paradoxically "saved the final," thus preventing a conflagration in extra time. In conclusion, he emphasized the historical difficulty of beating the host country, but reminded everyone that while Morocco had a good team, "Senegal was a very strong team." This gap in quality allowed the Lions to triumph despite the challenging circumstances.
