Cameroun: le président de l'Assemblée nationale remplacé après 34 ans
The Cameroonian National Assembly on Tuesday elected Théodore Datouo, a member of parliament from the presidential majority, as its leader to replace Cavaye Yéguié Djibril, 86, the outgoing president who had been in office for 34 years.
Théodore Datouo, 66, a member of parliament in the Western region, was until then one of the vice-presidents of the assembly, largely dominated by the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM), the party of President Paul Biya in power since 1982 in Cameroon.
He received 133 votes out of 147 voters, thus obtaining a score of 90.47%.
The National Assembly had been presided over since 1992 by Cavaye Yéguié Djibril, elected deputy in the North of the country in 1973 during the era of the single party.
During President Paul Biya's only campaign rally in October 2025, Cavaye Yéguié Djibril publicly distinguished himself with a slurred speech in front of the public, fueling rumors about his state of health.
According to a long-established tradition, the arrival of a personality from another region at the head of the lower house of parliament calls for the replacement of the president of the Senate, Marcel Niat Njifenji, 91 years old, senator of the Western region.
