En Guinée, à Kankan : de nombreuses cartes électorales non retirées à la veille du référendum
Sunday, September 21, referendum day, has finally arrived. But in Kankan, Guinea's second-largest city, a worrying situation is emerging: in several neighborhoods, thousands of voter cards have still not been collected by their holders.
Still large stacks of cards
In the distribution centers visited this Saturday, the number of people attending remained low and the piles of electoral cards were still substantial.
• In the Senkefara district, 416 cards were still waiting for their owners.
• In Senkefara 2, there were 270.
• At Senkefara 3, 127 cards were left unsold.
The situation is no different elsewhere: in the Gboutouroun district, 310 cards remained available, while in Bordo SOS, out of a batch of around 5,000 cards, nearly 300 had still not been collected.
Tired agents, justifying citizens
On the ground, some agents are showing a certain weariness.
"We've been here for a month, we've done a lot. Those who are arriving now are careless people," laments a distribution agent met in Bordo.
On the citizens' side, other reasons are put forward.
"I wasn't in Kankan, I came back yesterday," explains a young man interviewed.
A risk to participation
On the eve of the election, this low turnout raises questions. Without a voter registration card, it is simply impossible for citizens to cast their ballots. This situation could impact turnout in this region, considered a major electoral stronghold.
