Guinée-Bissau : tolérance zéro en mer, nouvelles mesures des autorités
During the May Day celebrations, the maritime authorities of Guinea-Bissau announced a reinforced security plan to prevent any incidents.
The port captain of the Maritime and Port Institute (IMP-GB), Frankylim Mendes, stated that any vessel lacking life jackets and spare engines will be prohibited from operating. The IMP-GB will cover an operational area extending up to 80 meters above the waterline, while the Public Order Police (POP) will take over beyond that perimeter.

"Security will be guaranteed from the moment passengers board until they reach their meeting point," Mendes assured, specifying that the same measures applied during the Easter holidays will be reinstated on May 1st on all beaches in the country.

A total of 19 maritime police stations will be deployed. The areas of Bubaque, Bolama, and Varela will be under increased surveillance, with reinforcements sent from Cacheu to cope with the expected influx. Around Bissau, coast guards and POP agents will be deployed to supervise swimmers.

Authorities are also calling on the public to be cautious: to swim before consuming alcohol and to respect the ban on accessing beaches after 7 p.m., in order to prevent accidents.
