Mauritanie : arrivée de plus de mille réfugiés en provenance du Mali
More than a thousand new refugees fleeing insecurity in Mali arrived this week on the southeastern side of the Mauritanian border, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced in a statement Friday, describing "difficult living conditions" for them.
Since 2012, Mali has faced a deep security crisis, fueled in particular by violence from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda), the Islamic State (IS) organization, as well as community criminal groups.
Many civilians are regularly victims of reprisals and abuses by the army and its Russian proxies or by jihadists, accused of having collaborated with the enemy camp.
To escape this violence, many Malians are trying to reach neighbouring Mauritania, which has seen an influx of refugees from Mali since the end of October.
"The security situation in Mali remains very unstable, with an intensification of military operations, reported airstrikes and incidents targeting institutional property that continue to cause displacement towards Mauritania," says UNHCR.
The organization says it has registered this week "1,103 new refugees (188 families) in Bassikounou and Néma, bringing the cumulative total to approximately 7,310 people (1,161 families) since the start of the influx on October 24", stressing that these figures are probably underestimated.
According to the UNHCR, the new arrivals are mainly women and children, with an increase in the number of elderly people. They come primarily from localities in the Timbuktu region, located in northern Mali.
"Refugees are increasingly dispersed across several villages and informal sites along the Hodh Chargui border, having crossed numerous informal entry points, which complicates their identification, registration and the assistance provided to them," the organization adds, describing "difficult living conditions" for them.
"The protection needs are significant," the organization emphasized. It called for "sustained monitoring of their protection" and "strengthening of response capacities."
