Presidential election in Cameroon: Issa Tchiroma, a warmongering candidate?

Présidentielle au Cameroun : Issa Tchiroma, un candidat va-t-en-guerre ?

No one does it better than him. Paul Biya, the Cameroonian president, remains the oldest head of state in Africa and the world. At the beginning of October, he completed 43 years at the helm of this Central African country. It was thought that at 92, the phoenix would finally take a well-deserved retirement, but wrong! He has no plans to move out of Unity Palace.

As in 2018, he was once again declared the winner of the presidential election of October 12, 2025, with 53.66% of the votes cast. But his victory was contested by his main opponent, Issa Tchiroma.

The Constitutional Council, an "institution hostile to the sovereignty of the people"

The latter accuses the Constitutional Council of having published "skewed results," calling into question its impartiality. "This institution has just turned away from its mission as guardian of peace and democracy to become a partisan body, an enemy of the sovereignty of the people," the opposition leader charged. He urges the people to engage in peaceful resistance "until victory."

He wants to liberate the country "by any means necessary," even at the cost of his life.

In short, the politician is adopting a strategy of confrontation with the powers that be.

On Monday, October 27th, the septuagenarian even publicly declared that he would liberate the country "by any means necessary," even at the cost of his life. He was denouncing, on this occasion, a security operation in front of his residence in Garoua, in the north of the country.

According to him, the police officers allegedly shot "at point-blank range" at the civilians who were camping that day in front of his home, killing two.

True to his belligerent rhetoric, the disgruntled candidate announced yesterday, Wednesday, a "third stage" of his fight.

“In 2010, in neighboring countries, the Constitutional Council proclaimed the incumbent president the winner, and he was even sworn in. But the Constitutional Council was then considered partisan and subservient to the government. We find ourselves in a similar situation today. Let them rejoice, let them dance – this is just the beginning: the third stage begins soon,” he posted on social media.

"You have Tchiroma in front of you: your impunity is coming to an end."

He then issued a warning to the country's leaders, in a more direct and threatening tone: "You have Tchiroma in front of you. Your impunity is coming to an end. Shedding the people's blood was a grave mistake. You could have accepted my outstretched hand for an honorable exit. You will now have to answer for your actions."

The president of the National Salvation Front of Cameroon (FSNC) is clearly counting on his supporters to force the current regime to back down. He has already called on them to be determined and mobilized.

"Tomorrow will mark a new stage in our fight."

“Listen to me carefully: only your determination will make them leave. Fear will not stop us. This year, we have a unique opportunity to say enough is enough. While we mourn our dead, they rejoice and openly mock having used their position to fraudulently get their candidate elected; which will allow them to remain in office and keep us in poverty. Tomorrow will mark a new stage in our struggle,” he told them.

In all likelihood, the opposition leader does not want to admit defeat and prefers to plunge the country into protest.
