Togo: l’ex-président de la Transition au Burkina Faso, Paul-Henri Damiba, arrêté et expulsé
This marks a new chapter in the attempted coup in Burkina Faso on January 3rd. Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba has been arrested and expelled from Lomé, where he had been living in exile since October 2022. In exile in Togo, after being overthrown by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Colonel Damiba is regularly accused of trying to destabilize the junta that succeeded him.
According to a source close to the military, Lieutenant-Colonel Damiba was taken from his villa in the "Lomé 2" district to the Court of Appeal on Friday, January 16. There, a judge ruled on his case and granted the extradition request made by the Burkinabe authorities.
As soon as the decision was handed down, some personal belongings were brought to him from the "Six Villas" complex where he resided. The "Six Villas" is a heavily guarded area of the Togolese capital where Paul-Henri Damiba was not entirely free to do as he pleased.
The soldiers who escorted him then took him to the airport on Saturday, January 17, for a destination that has not yet been confirmed.
This extradition fuels Ouagadougou's claim of a plot against Ibrahim Traoré's regime. The former head of Burkina Faso's transitional government is, in fact, regularly accused by the current junta of wanting to overthrow it. The latest alleged plot was foiled, according to Ouagadougou, on January 3rd.
At this time, neither the authorities in Ouagadougou nor those in Lomé have communicated on this extradition nor on the final destination of the former head of the transition.
