Nous disons non à l’incohérence (Par Abdoulaye DIENG)
A look back at recent history is necessary to understand what we are experiencing today—and to try to move beyond it. After two years of hope, fueled by a long, determined, and demanding struggle, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye seems to be embarking on a path that raises legitimate questions. The Senegalese people mobilized with a clear aspiration: for real, uncompromising change to the political system and modes of governance, in order to finally open a credible path toward development, justice, and harmonious coexistence.
Recent history calls for caution. The change of power brought about by Abdoulaye Wade initially sparked immense hope, before revealing its limitations through a sometimes poorly managed liberalization and a gradual weakening of certain collective values. Macky Sall's time in office, for its part, has reinforced the perception of a highly centralized power structure, marked by major political tensions and growing distrust among a segment of the population.
It is within this demanding context that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye's actions are taking place today. One particularity distinguishes the current situation, however: unlike his predecessors, he does not appear to have a sufficiently consolidated political base built around an apparatus he fully controls. By distancing himself from PASTEF and aligning himself with a broader coalition, he gives the impression of a shift from the initial project presented to the people, particularly regarding key expectations such as a break with certain political practices, accountability, and justice for the victims of past crises.
At the same time, the convening of a new national dialogue, accompanied by the rapid mobilization of certain figures from previous political periods, creates a sense of déjà vu. For some, this rekindles a feeling of weariness and a sense of repeating familiar patterns. Certain suspicions naturally resurface: reshuffling of familiar players, or even the prospect of a national unity government that could be seen as a dilution of responsibilities and commitments.
In this context, expectations remain high. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye's responsibility is to ensure his actions follow a clear path, faithful to the mandate he received. Sustainable political momentum cannot be built without a clearly defined direction, a solid political foundation, and governmental coherence. The central challenge remains the effective implementation of commitments: to champion the demand for a break with the past, to address the impunity of the past, and to consistently deploy the PASTEF project, which has earned the people's trust.
It is in this spirit that a citizen voice is expressed that is both responsible and committed to the common good. It does not stem from principled opposition, but from a demand for consistency. Rejecting the gradual erosion of commitments and any return to rejected practices also affirms the importance of clarity in public action and of keeping one's word.
Senegal doesn't need political maneuvering or endless dialogue, but a clear and decisive course of action. The mandate entrusted to the nation is binding and demands actions that live up to the expressed expectations. Otherwise, there is a real risk of a disconnect between public rhetoric and deeds. This would have direct consequences for the credibility of the institutions and those who represent them. For a president whose legitimacy rests primarily on the trust placed in a project, the risk is significant.
The requirement today is simple: stay the course and respect the commitments made to the Nation.
We say no to inconsistency.
