25 Mars 1957 - 25 Mars 2026 : Hommage à Serigne Babacar Sy, l’Imam de l'Istiqâma

A major figure of the Tijaniyya order, Serigne Babacar Sy, affectionately known as "Borom Bonnet Carré," embodied a spiritual authority founded on righteousness, knowledge, and a profound sense of duty. From his accession to the caliphate in 1922 to his monumental work of organization, he permanently structured the Tijaniyya community while remaining the scrupulous guardian of the legacy of his illustrious father, El Hadji Malick Sy.

A youth marked by science and piety

Born in 1885 in Saint-Louis, Serigne Babacar Sy grew up in an environment steeped in religious sciences and profound spirituality. From a very young age, he distinguished himself by his exemplary piety, his iron discipline, and a total commitment to learning the Quran and Islamic sciences, thus forging an extraordinary spiritual education.

1922: The challenge of succession

Upon his father's death in 1922, he ascended to the Caliphate at the young age of 37. He embraced this role as a sacred trust (Amana). Despite initial doubts from some contemporaries regarding his youth, he calmly asserted the legitimacy of his succession, bearing with historical rigor the responsibility of guiding the community.

The architect of the modern Tijaniyya

For over three decades, he worked to preserve and structure the Way. He is notably credited with establishing the Dahiras in 1932, a major innovation that strengthened the spiritual and social support of the disciples. He formulated balanced principles of life, harmoniously reconciling faith, work, and community involvement.

The Istiqama: An eternal legacy

At the heart of his teachings lies Istiqâma—constant righteousness—elevated to an absolute rule of life. Through his exemplary conduct and legendary firmness, Serigne Babacar Sy leaves behind the image of a demanding spiritual guide, both of himself and his followers. Today, 69 years after his passing, his legacy continues to enlighten and guide generations of believers in Senegal and throughout the world.
