Cisjordanie : Une Palestinienne de 55 ans violemment agressée par un colon masqué alors qu'elle cueillait des olives

A 55-year-old Palestinian woman has been hospitalized after being severely beaten on the head with a baton by a masked Jewish settler while she was helping to pick olives, the BBC reports.

The unprovoked attack, which occurred Sunday morning in the Palestinian village of Turmus Ayya in the occupied West Bank, was filmed by American journalist Jasper Nathaniel.

The story of the attack: an “ambush”

Mr. Nathaniel told the BBC that the settler first struck the woman with a stick, before hitting her again as she lay on the ground. The victim was identified locally as Umm Saleh Abu Alia.

Describing the violence of the scene, the journalist told the BBC: "It's the most vivid image that has ever been etched in my mind." He added: "He hit her once and I saw her body go completely limp. And then he stood over her and hit her twice more."

The mother of five was seen bleeding as she was being transported to a hospital. Initially admitted to intensive care, she is now in stable condition, according to doctors. Her cousin, Hamdi Abu Alia, confirmed to the BBC that medical staff found she had been hit twice on the head.

The mayor of the nearby village of al-Mughayyir, Amin Abu Alia, also confirmed details of the attack.

The Shadow of Israeli Soldiers

The attack was part of a larger incident in which at least 15 masked settlers were seen throwing stones and attacking other Palestinians harvesting crops, as well as activists who came to support them, including Mr. Nathaniel. At least one car was set on fire and others had their windows smashed.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told the BBC that the clash was dispersed after the arrival of its forces and that it "strongly condemns any form of violence" by settlers.

However, Mr. Nathaniel made a specific and serious allegation, claiming that Israeli soldiers were on the scene before the attack and had "lured" them into an "ambush." He added that the soldiers had "sped off" just before the settlers launched the assault. The BBC relayed this specific accusation to the IDF.

It is noteworthy that at least 80% of Turmus Ayya residents hold US citizenship or residency, according to Israeli media. The BBC has contacted the US State Department and the US Embassy for comment.

The olive harvest, a high-risk period

The attack comes amid a wave of attacks in recent weeks linked to the olive harvest, which officially began on October 9.

Harvesting is an ancient ritual central to Palestinian culture and an economic necessity. However, it is increasingly precarious. Farmers in the West Bank—internationally considered a Palestinian territory occupied by Israel—face increased risks during this season, including organized settler attacks.

Of the 71 settler attacks documented by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the West Bank between October 7 and 13, half were related to the harvest season, affecting Palestinians in 27 villages. In 2025, more than 3,200 Palestinians were injured in settler attacks in the West Bank, according to OCHA.

Observers say these attacks are aimed at intimidating Palestinians and ultimately driving them off their land so that settlers can seize it. The vast majority of these acts go unpunished: only 3% of official investigations into settler violence between 2005 and 2023 resulted in a conviction, according to the Israeli civil rights group Yesh Din. Many incidents go uninvestigated.
