"Faible et catastrophique" : Trump s'en prend au pape Léon XIV après son message antiguerre
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he is "not a big fan" of Pope Leo XIV, who the day before had delivered a fiery speech against the war, and launched a violent tirade against him on social media.
“I’m not a big fan of Pope Leo. He’s very progressive, and he’s a man who doesn’t believe in fighting crime,” Mr. Trump told reporters at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He accused the pontiff of “playing games with a country that wants to acquire nuclear weapons,” referring to Iran.
Shortly after, Donald Trump published a long message on his Truth Social network, accusing Leo XIV of supporting the Iranian nuclear weapons program, opposing the American military operation in Venezuela in January, and meeting with supporters of former Democratic President Barack Obama, among other things.
“Pope Leo is WEAK on crime, and catastrophic on foreign policy,” the American president’s message begins. He goes on to argue that Leo XIV was appointed pope “simply because he is American, and the Church thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump,” asserting: “Leo would not be in the Vatican if I were not in the White House.”
"I don't want a pope who criticizes the president of the United States, because I am doing exactly what I was elected to do, OVERWHELMINGLY, which is to bring crime down to historically low levels and create the greatest stock market in history," the Republican president also wrote.
Donald Trump accompanied his message with an AI-generated image in which he is seen, in a white and red robe, placing his hand on the forehead of a sick man in a hospital bed, surrounded by people praying, against a backdrop of the American flag, the Statue of Liberty, fighter jets and eagles.
In one of his most scathing critiques of the conflicts engulfing the planet, particularly in the Middle East, Leo XIV declared on Saturday that faith was necessary "to face together this dramatic moment in history."
"Enough of the idolatry of self and money! Enough of displays of force! Enough of war! True strength is manifested in serving life," the American pope declared during a prayer vigil for peace at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
“Dear brothers and sisters, there are certainly imperative responsibilities that fall upon the leaders of nations. To them we cry out: stop! It is time to make peace! Sit down at the table of dialogue and mediation, and not at the table where rearmament is planned and where deadly actions are decided!” he also declared.
As he has done in the past, he did not name any political figure or designate any country in particular. Since his election in May 2025, Leo XIV, born in Chicago, has taken a clear stance against certain decisions of the Trump administration, while keeping communication channels open.
