Le futur Premier ministre hongrois exécutera les mandats d'arrêt de la CPI, y compris contre Netanyahu
Hungarian Prime Minister-in-designate Peter Magyar announced on Monday that his country would rejoin the International Criminal Court (ICC) and execute the arrest warrants it has issued, including the one concerning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Nationalist Viktor Orban, who was in power for 16 years, announced last year the country's withdrawal from the ICC, which was to take effect on June 2, 2026, after receiving Mr. Netanyahu in Budapest.
Following his victory in the April 12 parliamentary elections, Peter Magyar immediately announced his intention to rejoin the International Criminal Tribunal. However, according to the Israeli account of a phone call with the Israeli Prime Minister in Budapest, he had invited him to Budapest on October 23 for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 uprising against the Soviets.
When questioned by a journalist on Monday about a possible contradiction, Peter Magyar clarified that he had invited all the leaders with whom he had spoken by telephone.
"If a country is a member of the International Criminal Court and a wanted person enters its territory, then he or she must be detained," added the future pro-European conservative leader at a press briefing after the first meeting of his parliamentary group.
"I don't need to say everything over the phone. I assume that every head of state and government knows these laws," he added.
He indicated that his team had looked into the future government's interruption of the withdrawal process before Hungary officially left the ICC on June 2.
The ICC, which is based in The Hague, notably issued an arrest warrant in 2024 against Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
Furthermore, Peter Magyar announced that the inaugural session of the National Assembly would be held on the weekend of May 9 and 10, during which he will be sworn in.
