Mort d'Asha Bhosle, chanteuse légendaire de Bollywood
Asha Bhosle, one of the most iconic voices in Indian film music, died Sunday in Mumbai at the age of 92, her family announced.
The artist, a two-time Grammy Award nominee, had been hospitalized for exhaustion and was suffering from a chest infection.
"My mother passed away today (Sunday). Her funeral will take place tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai," her son Anand Bhosle told the press.
Asha Bhosle's voice is emblematic of Bollywood music from the 1970s and 1980s. Over her seven-decade career, the performer has recorded more than 12,000 songs, singing in multiple languages of the country.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "deeply saddened" by his passing.
"Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, has enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts around the world," he wrote on the social network X. "She will continue to inspire generations and her songs will resonate forever in people's lives."
Born on September 8, 1933 into a family of musicians, Asha Bhosle began singing as a child alongside her older sister, another great name in Indian song, Lata Mangeshkar - nicknamed the "Nightingale of India" and who died in 2022.
Asha Bhosle has embraced genres as varied as pop and folk and established herself as one of the most versatile interpreters of songs from Indian films.
She collaborated with the British group Gorillaz on their latest album, The Mountain ("Parvat"), released in February.
Passionate about gastronomy, she also launched her restaurant chain, Asha's, with establishments in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and also in the United Kingdom.
