Kaffrine : Deux ans de prison et 500 000 FCFA d'amende pour trois jeunes voleurs de chèvres
Three young men, identified by their initials GS (21 years old), AS (20 years old) and DD (21 years old), appeared yesterday before the Kaffrine High Court. They were being prosecuted for cattle theft committed as a group and criminal conspiracy.
According to the facts presented at the hearing, the defendants attempted to take advantage of the crowds at the Birkilane livestock market to sell goats that had been reported stolen. To transport their loot, they hired an intercity transport vehicle, commonly known as a "schedule." However, the driver, having heard of livestock thefts in the area, became suspicious of the animals' origin and alerted the authorities.
In court, the three defendants attempted to deny the charges, but their statements were deemed inconsistent by the court in light of the evidence gathered during the investigation. In his closing argument, the public prosecutor requested the full force of the law be applied to the defendants.
After deliberation, the court found them guilty on all charges. They were each sentenced to two years in prison and fined 500,000 FCFA. The convicted men were also ordered to pay 37,000 FCFA jointly and severally in damages to the plaintiff.
