Abdoulaye Wilane : « Un pays qui laisse mourir ses étudiants perd son âme »
Abdoulaye Wilane, President of the Kaffrine Departmental Council, National Secretary of the Socialist Party and spokesperson, has broken his silence to react to the recent events that took place at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD).
In a statement, the socialist leader claims to be speaking "not as an ordinary politician, but as a father, as an elder, as a citizen," saying he is "worried about the future of our youth and our country."
Referring to the violence in Dakar, Abdoulaye Wilane described the scenes he witnessed as "unspeakable" and stated that he was "moved, terrified, I should say." According to him, "what is happening in our universities, and particularly at Cheikh Anta Diop University, is serious. Very serious," adding that "to deny or minimize it would be a moral and political failing."
For the spokesperson of the Socialist Party, the current crisis cannot be reduced to the sole issue of student grants. "Yes, the issue of student grants exists and it deserves clear, fair, and humane answers," he acknowledges. However, he points to "a series of errors, a lack of dialogue, and a confused management of the announced reforms."
Abdoulaye Wilane also criticized certain administrative decisions, notably the closure of university restaurants. A measure which, according to him, "deprived thousands of students of their only daily meal." "When you starve young people, you inevitably breed anger," he stated.
The politician also denounced what he called a "security response" to the university crisis. He mentioned arrests and alleged violence, noting that "there are injuries" and "one death this year." For him, "nothing, absolutely nothing, justifies this in a Republic worthy of the name."
“To govern is not to repress. To govern is to anticipate, listen and protect,” argues Abdoulaye Wilane, who calls on the authorities to prioritize dialogue.
Emphasizing the importance of the university, he asserts that "the university is not a battlefield," but "the place where the nation's intelligence is formed." He reminds us that "Senegalese youth are not a threat. They are our future."
In conclusion, Abdoulaye Wilane appeals to the authorities and calls for "opening a sincere dialogue, repairing what can be repaired and doing justice to those who have suffered", warning that "a country that lets its students die has already begun to lose its soul".
