Assemblée nationale : Un député alerte sur « une République qui se casse »
The second reading of the bill amending the Electoral Code gave rise to a particularly harsh speech against the government and the current political climate in Senegal. Speaking in the National Assembly, Thierno Alassane Sall of the opposition denounced the ongoing tensions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, accusing the current leaders of plunging the country into a perpetual election campaign.
In a somber statement, the parliamentarian began by expressing his disappointment with the expectations raised by the 2024 political transition. "All this for nothing," he repeated before the assembly. According to him, the Senegalese people, who had overwhelmingly supported the new government with "54% in the first round," had hoped to see the emergence of a new model of governance capable of inspiring Africa. "We hoped that Senegal would finally emerge. Africa was watching Senegal and hoping that the country would set an example," he declared.
A permanent election campaign
The MP then accused the executive branch of having transformed the presidential term into a permanent political confrontation between the head of state and his prime minister. According to him, tensions began as early as July 2025, when the prime minister allegedly started "attacking the president," triggering reprisals at the highest levels of government. "It's a permanent election campaign between a president and a prime minister throughout the entire term," he declared.
Highly critical of the atmosphere in the chamber, the MP denounced behavior he deemed unworthy of the parliamentary institution. "The entire nation is watching you," he declared to the majority party MPs. He accused certain parliamentarians of trying to prevent their colleagues from speaking freely, citing scenes of jeering and intimidation during debates. "Terrorizing people to prevent them from speaking is not what the Senegalese people expect from the National Assembly," he asserted.
The parliamentarian also warned of a gradual deterioration in the political and institutional climate. "The Republic is unfortunately falling apart, and you will bear a heavy responsibility," he cautioned. According to him, internal divisions within the government, constant accusations of conspiracy, and political tensions risk permanently weakening Senegal. "When they have no enemies, they invent them. And when they can't find any, they find them within their own ranks," he declared, referring to the alleged tensions among those in the executive branch.
In a solemn appeal, the MP urged political leaders to preserve republican institutions. "Get a grip on yourselves before it's too late," he declared. He then reminded them that MPs had not been given a mandate to "dismantle the Republic," despite their large parliamentary majority.
