President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye called on Monday, April 20, for increased joint patrols in the Sahel region, during the opening of the 10th edition of the Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa, held at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center.
According to him, terrorist groups exploit weaknesses in security systems to extend their influence into increasingly distant territories. He reiterated that security and humanitarian threats transcend national borders and necessitate lasting collaboration between states, as well as within each country.
The head of state stressed the need to involve the population in identifying threats, anticipating them, and preventing devastating actions. He believes that institutional mechanisms alone are insufficient.
In this context, Bassirou Diomaye Faye highlighted the initiatives already underway in the Sahel region, which he considers essential to strengthen and sustain between border countries, particularly through joint patrols. He illustrated his point with the porous border between Mali and Senegal.
The president concluded that a purely national response would not be fully effective in the face of the terrorist threat. He advocated for a comprehensive strategy based on internal control, regional coherence, controlled partnerships, rigorous border control, enhanced intelligence sharing, and joint operations between defense and security forces.
