Congrès de Pastef : Sonko rend hommage aux martyrs et met en garde
Emotions reached a fever pitch when Ousmane Sonko, the re-elected president of Pastef-Les Patriotes, dedicated the final part of his speech to imprisoned activists, grieving families, and the victims of the years of political confrontation that preceded the party's rise to power. Addressing an attentive audience, Sonko urged delegates never to forget those who, in his view, paid the heaviest price in the political struggle. "We are thinking of all those who were arrested, imprisoned, injured, or humiliated for their commitment," he declared, before mentioning the young people who disappeared during past demonstrations.
"The blood shed creates a historical responsibility."
The president of Pastef emphasized what he considers a moral obligation to the victims and their families. According to him, the activists who fell in the struggle sought neither privileges nor personal gain, but simply aspired to greater justice, freedom, and dignity. "Every drop of blood shed by the people creates a historical responsibility," he stated. In one of the most powerful passages of his speech, he declared that no political considerations should lead to these sacrifices being forgotten. "A revolution that forgets its martyrs always ends up forgetting its people," he warned.
Beyond the tribute, Sonko outlined his vision for the Senegal he hopes to see emerge. He described a country where natural resources would primarily fund education, healthcare, research, and infrastructure, rather than benefiting a minority or foreign interests. The leader of the Patriots also envisioned a Senegal where young people would find employment opportunities, where farmers, fishermen, and artisans would earn a decent living, and where the administration would be more focused on serving the citizens. He emphasized the need to strengthen trust in institutions, particularly the justice system and the fight against corruption.
A warning to those in power
In a particularly noteworthy passage, Sonko addressed a message to all political leaders within his camp. According to him, the conquest of power must never lead to abandoning the principles that underpinned Pastef's struggle. "We have no right to become a replacement elite," he declared. The party president warned against the risks of complacency, resignation, or the pursuit of privileges associated with holding public office. "We have no right to turn the revolution into a career," he insisted.
In praise of militant loyalty
Sonko also paid tribute to the leaders, activists, and executives whom he considers to have remained loyal to the party's direction despite pressure and difficulties. Without naming specific individuals, he praised those who, in his view, prioritized political consistency over their personal interests. This loyalty, he explained, is one of the guarantees of the sustainability of the project championed by Pastef.
To conclude his speech, the leader of the Patriots invoked several values deeply rooted in Senegalese society: jom (dignity and courage), ngor (honor), kersa (restraint), teranga (hospitality), sutura (discretion and protection of others), and the spirit of community solidarity. According to him, these principles constitute a common foundation that transcends ethnic, religious, or regional affiliations.
“Nothing can justify betraying them, especially not the exercise of power,” he declared. Sonko asserted that the Senegalese people had now become aware of their capacity to influence their collective destiny. “Once a people has glimpsed the possibility of its sovereignty, it never forgets it,” he affirmed to applause.
