Décès de l’étudiant Abdoulaye Ba : Le PDS dénonce une répression « disproportionnée » et exige une enquête indépendante
The Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) expressed its "deep sadness" and "indignation" on Tuesday following the tragic death of student Abdoulaye Ba, which occurred in the context of student mobilization linked to the non-payment of university scholarships.
In a statement released on February 10 in Dakar, the opposition party described this disappearance as a "national tragedy" and directly blamed the government's handling of the university crisis.
The PDS offers its condolences to the family of the deceased, to his fellow students and to the entire university community, while denouncing what it considers a "brutal" response from the authorities to social demands deemed legitimate.
According to the party, for several months, Senegalese students have been raising the alarm about their precarious living conditions, repeated delays in scholarship payments, and the lack of serious dialogue with the government. The PDS accuses the executive branch led by Ousmane Sonko of having prioritized intimidation and repression over listening and consultation.
"To govern is not to silence through fear; to govern is to listen, to engage in dialogue and to protect," the statement emphasizes, condemning "in the strongest possible terms" the "disproportionate" use of force against students.
In response to this situation, the PDS (Senegalese Democratic Party) is making several demands, including the immediate opening of an independent and transparent investigation to determine all those responsible for the death of Abdoulaye Ba. It also demands the prompt payment of scholarships and arrears owed to students, as well as a lasting improvement in their living and studying conditions. Finally, it calls for an end to what it describes as the systematic repression of social movements and for respect for democratic freedoms.
In its statement, the PDS argues that Senegal "cannot accept that a regime, which came to power in the name of change and social justice, sacrifices its youth on the altar of authoritarianism." For the party, building national sovereignty necessarily involves educating young people, not silencing them.
In conclusion, the PDS affirms that it will remain "alongside students, youth and all the vital forces of the nation" to defend democracy and the principles of the rule of law, emphasizing: "Never again should a student die for demanding their scholarship."
