The adoption of the Initial Finance Law (LFI) was an opportunity for the Secretary of State to the Prime Minister, in charge of Relations with Institutions and spokesperson for the Government, Marie Rose Faye, to launch a virulent political attack against the economic management of the old regime.
Speaking after the vote on the 2026 budget, Marie Rose Faye stated that the current government has inherited a difficult budgetary context, marked by a budget deficit and public debt deemed "more than high." She attributed this situation to "an irresponsible regime whose sole objective was to enrich itself instead of serving the people."
Addressing the members of parliament, the government spokesperson emphasized that the current financial situation is a direct legacy of twelve years of previous governance. She stressed that the current government must fulfill its responsibilities in an environment characterized by multiple social emergencies and limited resources.
Continuing her criticism, she targeted the attitude of some opposition MPs, arguing that they "should have shown decency" given their past record, rather than posing as defenders of the people today.
Despite this challenging economic assessment, Marie Rose Faye expressed the new government's commitment to a clean break and recovery. She highlighted two key levers for restoring economic sovereignty and social justice: the National Transformation Agenda Senegal 2050 and the Economic and Social Recovery Plan (PRES).
The Secretary of State emphasized the nature of the adopted budget, which prioritizes structuring projects financed primarily from domestic resources. This approach is presented as a concrete way to reduce external dependence and strengthen the foundations of an endogenous economy.
"Senegal is standing strong"
Finally, Marie Rose Faye emphasized the country's resilience, noting that Senegal has been operating without an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program for eighteen months. "Despite everything, the country is standing strong. It is thriving and even moving mountains," she declared, praising the commitment of an executive branch she described as "hardworking, patriotic, and honest."
She concluded by stressing the need for constructive collaboration between the Executive and the Legislative branches, recalling that the budget is the "numerical expression of our common vision and our commitments to the Senegalese people" and that the objective is to transform this difficult legacy into an opportunity for rebuilding.
