Éligibilité de Sonko : Diomaye tranche net et évacue toute polémique
Faced with persistent questions about Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko's eligibility, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye put an end to the debate. Without mincing words, the head of state stated that the question simply doesn't arise. "Since 2024, the question of his eligibility has never been a problem for me," he declared, dismissing the doubts expressed in the public sphere.
For him, the facts are clear: the former opposition leader has regained his civic rights and participated in recent elections. The president recalls that Ousmane Sonko had been prevented from running in an election because of his voter status at the time. This situation is now resolved. "He voted in the elections, then again in November 2024, and he was elected," he insists, emphasizing that his term is indeed "ongoing," even though it was suspended at one point.
In this interpretation, any controversy appears artificial. The head of state favors a strictly legal approach, believing that the eligibility conditions are met and that the debate is more a matter of political polemic than a genuine dispute.
When questioned about the bill introduced by the PASTEF party to amend the electoral code, Bassirou Diomaye Faye adopted a nuanced position. While acknowledging the legitimacy of the parliamentary initiative, he questioned its urgency. "I don't see the urgency," he stated, signaling a certain distance from this approach, despite its support from the majority. This was a way of highlighting the distinction between political dynamics and the institutional stance of the Head of State.
The president, however, was keen to emphasize the technical work that preceded this proposal. He explained that the text was drafted with the involvement of several stakeholders: legal advisors to the presidency, the prime minister's office, and the National Assembly; the electoral commission; parliamentary officials; and members of the government. "I read the text, I reread the Constitution," he stated, highlighting a transparent and rigorous approach designed to avoid any disputes.
Beyond the controversy, Bassirou Diomaye Faye insists on the essential point: the reform of the electoral system as a whole. He mentions consensus reached through political dialogue, particularly regarding the single ballot, the ongoing revision of the electoral register, and the strengthening of the Independent National Commission. But on the specific question of Ousmane Sonko's eligibility, the message is unambiguous: for the president, the debate is closed. This firm stance, far from completely extinguishing the controversy, could instead fuel criticism from those who denounce this issue as still sensitive in the Senegalese political landscape.
