Forum de Dakar sur la paix et la sécurité : Ghazouani plaide pour la gouvernance et l'unité africaine
The President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, spoke on Monday at the opening ceremony of the 10th edition of the Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa, whose theme is "Reflection on Security Challenges in Africa", at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center (CICAD).
Speaking on how to ensure stability on the continent, he stated: "I think that governance, whatever form it takes, and we will exercise it nonetheless, plays a significant role in stability or instability. Whether it is political, economic, or social governance, we must pay attention to it."
According to him, it is also crucial to seek to calm political life through dialogue and consensus, in order to overcome as many divisions and contradictions as possible within our states. "This naturally involves building the rule of law. Around us, at the level of our states, the rule of law must be further strengthened through the consolidation of our democracies. I believe that no lasting progress is possible without inclusive development that benefits everyone," he says.
Expanding on his remarks, President Ghazouani stated that "at the continental level, I have tried to emphasize unity and collective effectiveness, because it is collectively that we will move forward."
He argues: “We must strengthen our capacity to act, to coordinate our efforts as effectively as possible, by pooling resources as much as possible, not as little as possible. This is effective in consolidating our organization, that is, the unity of the African Union, and in adapting its tools to the current challenges of our time.”
According to him, "the integration of the continent must be accelerated, in particular, as has been said on several occasions, through the effective implementation, and I emphasize the word 'effective', of the African Continental Free Trade Area."
“Finally, we need to invest in strengthened structures and coordination between regional organizations. There is a real need for this too. The current ECOWAS chairman is here. Generally speaking, I want to talk about ECOWAS because they are present, but that's at the continental level. I think these regional organizations need to be more connected with each other, but also with the Union,” he suggested.
