« Guerre ouverte » au sommet : Ousmane Sonko lance un ultimatum à Diomaye Faye
The political climate is deteriorating significantly between the Executive and the Legislative branches. In its edition of Saturday, June 20, Les Échos even suggests that "the simmering conflict has become open warfare" between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko, in a situation where "each will use the means afforded by their position to make life difficult for the other."
According to the newspaper, Ousmane Sonko informed the National Assembly's bureau that he had submitted a request for an "opinion" to the Head of State regarding the proposed constitutional reform bills. Macky Sall's successor has until Monday, June 22nd, to respond.
Les Échos also points out that, in order to avoid a deadlock, some MPs transformed the Executive's draft constitutional reforms into draft bills, a move aimed at "bypassing the head of state".
The Pastef leader has already called a new meeting of the bureau on Wednesday, June 24, in order to "establish the timetable" for examining the draft laws, if no response is received by then.
According to the daily newspaper, this decision "proves that the opinion of the President of the Republic is not binding" on Ousmane Sonko and that the former Prime Minister is ready to "override" it if Bassirou Diomaye Faye's position does not go in the direction he wants.
