L’alerte rouge du Pr. Diomaye : «Pastef risque de se détruire si…»
In his extensive interview this Saturday, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye issued a warning to the Pastef party. He believes the political organization, to which he belongs and which is currently led by Ousmane Sonko, is on a trajectory that risks its downfall.
Former Secretary General of Pastef, Professor Diomaye, emphasized that he was instrumental in establishing almost all of the party's structures. He even recalled the groundwork he laid during the 2014 General Assembly, where he drafted the roadmap for the provisional steering committee for the congress.
"With the radiation, they began to install personification..."
“But at one point, a lack of public awareness was diagnosed for the party and it was decided to build the party around a personality. President Sonko was chosen and he did a great job with particular merit. We must recognize everyone’s merit,” he said.
But around 2018 and 2019, the party began to shift its dynamic. And this did not please Professor Diomaye at all. "With the expulsion, they started to establish a personification. Because the leader was beginning to have a significant presence," he said.
But, Professor Faye points out that at the time, Ousmane Sonko, President of Pastef, was lucid, stating that "Senegal does not need a messiah, nor heroes, but rather a critical mass of citizens who are fellow citizens of the issues."
"Sonko never believed in messianism, much less in being the leader of any kind of revolution."
And so, according to the Head of State, Sonko never believed in messianism, or in being a leader, "much less the leader of any revolution." And on this subject, he felt compelled to warn: "The trajectory currently being taken by Pastef, if its members do not stop it, risks destroying Pastef."
Because, he explains, this was the project that had always been emphasized within Pastef. And the project complemented the principle that Senegal does not need a messiah or heroes, but a critical mass of citizens.
"We wanted to distinguish the project, which had to be depersonalized, from the leader who embodies it at a given moment. Whatever his merit, whatever his courage," he said.
For President Diomaye, if the project is to extend beyond 50 years, it means it must transcend the current generation. "We cannot build this around an excessive personalization of the project. The authenticity of Pastef lies in deliberation, debate, and democratic choice," he insists.
