L’Alliance pour la République critique la déclaration du Premier ministre Ousmane Sonko et évoque plusieurs “inquiétudes majeures”
Dakar, February 27, 2026 – The Alliance for the Republic (APR) has reacted strongly to the statement made by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko before members of the National Assembly of Senegal. In a press release issued this Thursday, the opposition party's National Executive Secretariat expressed its reservations on several current national issues, ranging from civil liberties and the university situation to diplomacy and peanut marketing.
Public support for Moussa Bocar Thiam
In its introduction, the APR denounced what it called "unfounded accusations" against Moussa Bocar Thiam, while offering him its political support.
Homosexuality law: APR denounces a “political ambiguity”
Addressing the issue of the proposed tightening of the law on homosexuality, the APR recalled the position of former President Macky Sall, citing in particular his stances on the international stage, including in front of Barack Obama and during interviews given to France 2.
According to the party, the government's current approach presents "inconsistencies" between political announcements and the actual content of the proposed text. The APR also believes that certain provisions could spark debates about freedom of expression within Senegalese society.
Freedom of the press and the management of sensitive documents
The statement also criticizes the Prime Minister's remarks regarding the publication of medical documents related to certain legal proceedings. The APR believes these statements could be interpreted as pressure on the media, reiterating that legal proceedings are the sole responsibility of the judiciary.
The party is therefore calling for simultaneous respect for the confidentiality of personal data and the right to information.
Diplomatic relations: concerns about the situation of supporters detained in Morocco
The APR also addressed the situation of Senegalese supporters detained in Morocco. The party believes that the Prime Minister's statements reflect diplomatic difficulties and calls for intensified efforts to achieve a favorable outcome to this case.
Peanut marketing: producers in difficulty according to the APR
On the economic front, the press release addresses the peanut marketing campaign. The APR acknowledges the statistics presented by Sonacos but asserts that many producers are still experiencing difficulties selling their harvests.
The party is calling on the government to put in place an emergency plan to support farmers, particularly in rural areas of the peanut basin.
University crisis and social tensions
The APR also commented on the university situation, particularly following the death of student Abdoulaye Ba. The party believes that the announced creation of security infrastructure on campuses could exacerbate tensions.
He calls for a full investigation to establish the circumstances of the tragedy and prioritizes dialogue with university stakeholders.
Furthermore, the communiqué mentions the crisis in the education sector, denouncing salary cuts which, according to the APR, are fueling the discontent of teachers.
A call for political mobilization
In conclusion, the Alliance for the Republic affirms its desire to continue its role as a "republican" opposition, while calling on the nation's vital forces to remain mobilized around issues related to public freedoms, economic governance and social stability.
The party believes that the current context demands "concrete responses" to the political, economic and institutional challenges facing Senegal.
