Macky Sall à l’ONU : Mamoudou Ibra Kane appelle à la prudence
"It would be unwise for Senegal to refrain from supporting" Macky Sall's potential candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). This is the conviction of Mamoudou Ibra Kane.
In a post on his social media on Monday, February 16, 2026, the journalist believes that the candidacy of the former president of Senegal should neither be overestimated nor treated on the basis of emotion.
Mr. Kane therefore calls on the country's authorities to consider their actions, regardless of the choice that will be made in the context of the discussions at the African Union.
Stating that "the election, probable, unlikely or not probable, of the former President of the Republic, Macky Sall, as Secretary General of the UN does not depend solely on us," Mamoudou Ibra Kane believes that "his possible appointment should not make us unhappy, even if some compatriots have objective or subjective grievances against him."
Moreover, according to the journalist, the support or lack thereof from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is not decisive. "He (Macky Sall) may or may not end up at the helm of the United Nations, depending on whether he has the support of certain powers, particularly within the Security Council…" he writes, adding that "high-level diplomacy has its own realities that often escape the average person."
