During the press conference held this Tuesday, January 13, by the Alliance for the Republic (APR), supporters of the deputy-mayor of Agnams, Mouhamadou Farba Ngom, strongly contested the judicial decision keeping him in detention, denouncing what they call political persecution.
Speaking to the press, APR officials addressed the situation of two people implicated in this case: Tahirou Sarr and MP Mohamadou Ngom, known as "Farba".
They recalled that the announcement of Tahirou Sarr's release on January 12th had been widely welcomed by the public. This satisfaction was short-lived, they argued, due to the appeal filed by the financial prosecutor, a decision they directly attribute to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
For the APR, this appeal constitutes a repeat offense, noting that it is the second time a judge has ordered a release immediately challenged by the prosecution. The party believes this situation illustrates a justice system with double standards, marked by unequal treatment of individuals prosecuted for the same offenses.
APR officials assert that Farba Ngom is currently the only person detained in this case. They cite a series of events they consider indicative of a witch hunt: the lifting of his parliamentary immunity, his removal from the position of Vice-President of the National Assembly, and repeated accusations without established evidence for nearly a year.
Despite medical reports attesting to the incompatibility of the MP's health condition with prison detention, Farba Ngom remains in jail. The APR party considers this situation inhumane and contrary to the principles of the rule of law.
The party also denounced the public intervention of the Minister of Justice, arguing that Yassine Fall's press conference was more of a panic response than a normal institutional exercise. The APR questioned the Minister's role, accusing her of usurping the prosecutor's role in this affair.
According to party leaders, the entire case is political, and they categorically reject the possibility of a purely judicial process. They maintain that, given the inmate's illness, nothing prevents the court from ordering his release under judicial supervision, as provided for by law.
Considering the decision to keep them in detention as a legal heresy, the APR raises a central question: how can it be understood that two people charged with the same acts are treated differently? A question that the party addresses directly to the Senegalese justice system.
Faced with this situation, the Alliance for the Republic demands an end to all detentions deemed arbitrary and calls for their unconditional release.
An action plan has been announced. It will center around a tour of religious authorities, civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and diplomatic missions to preserve Senegal's image and stability. The APR also plans consultations with democratic and civic forces, as well as the upcoming organization of a national march.
In conclusion, party officials believe that the Republic is in danger and that democracy is at risk, calling for mobilization to safeguard them.
It should be noted that this press conference by the APR party took place after that of the Minister of Justice. The Minister of Justice, Yassine Fall, mentioned new elements that could strengthen the case against Farba Ngom.
