Me Oumar Youm évoque ses liens de parenté insoupçonnés avec le président Diomaye Faye
Invited to the Sunday Jury (JDD) on Iradio this Sunday, May 24, 2026, Me Oumar Youm revisited a singular aspect of his political trajectory: his close family ties with the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, even though the two men belong to diametrically opposed political camps.
During the interview, the former minister explained that their respective wives are full sisters, sharing "the same father and mother." This family ties, he argued, should never be a source of political tension.
“Politics is not meant to divide, it is meant to unite,” stated Oumar Youm. He believes it is entirely possible to maintain strong family relationships despite differences of opinion or political commitments.
To illustrate his point, he reminded everyone that in Senegalese society, political or religious differences do not preclude friendship or brotherhood. "You are Muslim, he is Catholic, but is that the end of the world? No," he declared, highlighting this model of coexistence.
The former leader of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) emphasizes the importance of discernment and "emotional intelligence" in managing family relationships when they intersect with politics. According to him, ideological convictions must absolutely remain separate from family feelings and human relationships.
Mr. Oumar Youm also addressed certain controversies surrounding family trips and gatherings involving their wives. He stated that he had never seen a problem with them, considering these relationships perfectly "natural." However, faced with criticism and misinterpretations, he said he now prioritizes greater discretion in order to avoid "unnecessary turmoil" surrounding the Head of State and the First Lady.
The former minister finally called for calm in the Senegalese public debate. "We can be in opposing camps without being animous," he argued, advocating for a noble political practice based on respect, consideration, and fraternity.
