« On croyait mon limogeage synonyme de fin » : Ousmane Sonko solde ses comptes avec ses détracteurs
Barely installed as President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko took advantage of his inaugural speech to respond directly to those he accuses of having wanted to permanently remove him from the political scene after his departure from the Prime Minister's office.
In a particularly forceful passage of his speech, the Pastef leader asserted that his detractors wrongly believed that his replacement as head of government would mark the twilight of his political influence.
“Some believed that the dismissal of a Prime Minister meant his political demise. But in a true democracy, no office exhausts popular legitimacy,” said Ousmane Sonko to enthusiastic applause and a standing ovation from the members of the presidential majority.
With this assertive statement, the newly elected Speaker of the National Assembly transformed his arrival at the helm into a striking demonstration of political resilience. He thus reaffirmed his undiminished institutional authority, despite his departure from the government, formalized just days earlier by the Head of State. Addressing the parliamentarians, Ousmane Sonko emphasized that the true source of power remains the people, not the ministerial portfolios held.
"The people remain the sole source of power," he insisted, believing that the historic trust placed in Pastef during the November 2024 legislative elections confers upon the National Assembly a "particular historical responsibility."
In the aftermath, the Pastef leader sought to reassure the public about his true intentions in leading the legislative institution. He formally denied any intention of using the National Assembly to "organize institutional chaos" or to orchestrate any "personal vendettas."
However, he simultaneously sent a free warning to Avenue Roume by declining his intention to make Parliament an inflexible counter-power to the executive.
"The National Assembly will not be a rubber-stamp chamber," he firmly warned, promising uncompromising oversight of government action and the deployment of all constitutional levers available to members of parliament.
This forceful declaration, made in a context of de facto dualism at the top of the State, immediately stands out as the major political manifesto of the new institutional sequence that is opening in Senegal.
