Ousmane Sonko : « Je le jure devant Dieu, il y a réellement eu un protocole de Cap Manuel »
Former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko affirmed on Tuesday that a political agreement had indeed been concluded with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye before the 2024 presidential election. Referring to what he calls the "Cap Manuel protocol", the Pastef leader gave his version of a commitment which he presents as the foundation of their political partnership.
Speaking to the press, Sonko maintained that the discussions took place while he was still detained at Cap Manuel prison. "There really was a Cap Manuel protocol," he stated from the outset. According to his account, it was in his cell that he received Bassirou Diomaye Faye to discuss the political future of the movement, at a time when postponing the presidential election was being considered: "I brought him to my cell in prison. At that point, he hadn't yet shown me the presidential decree. When he came, I told him that I had been offered the option of postponing the elections." The former Prime Minister claims to have rejected this option and to have confirmed his choice of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as their camp's candidate. "I refused. I told him: I have designated you, and if we get out, we will campaign, win the elections, and govern. In 2029, we will resume the normal course of things."
A sworn pledge
To lend weight to his statements, Ousmane Sonko solemnly swore to their veracity: "I swear it before God and the Holy Quran." According to him, Bassirou Diomaye Faye then accepted this political plan and presented his future term as a transitional period dedicated to reforms. "He told me: this term will be one of difficult reforms. I'll take them on myself, and then you'll have a clear path ahead."
Sonko also recounted having considered calling witnesses to formalize this mutual commitment. But, according to him, the future president refused this precaution. "I wanted to bring in witnesses. He told me it wasn't worth it because, if he were ever to betray me politically, he would think of his son who bears my name." This statement illustrates the level of trust that existed between the two men before their dramatic falling out.
The 2029 issue at the heart of the dispute
The Pastef party leader finally asserts that he clearly discussed the 2029 presidential election at that time. "I told him that if he continued on this path, I would support his candidacy in 2029. Otherwise, I would be a candidate myself." According to Sonko, Bassirou Diomaye Faye's response left no room for ambiguity: "He told me he would be my campaign manager."
These revelations, made in the context of an open rift between the two former comrades in arms, risk further fueling the political debate on the nature of the agreements that preceded the accession to power of the duo who embodied the Senegalese alternation of 2024.
