Réforme électorale : Thierno Alassane Sall dénonce une « loi taillée pour Sonko » et accuse la majorité d’« écraser la démocratie »
Thierno Alassane Sall has joined the list of critical voices that have been stirring up the assembly since the opening of debates on electoral reform on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. Between accusations of personalizing the texts, suspicions of political orientation and institutional tensions, the proposed law n°11/2026 amending the Electoral Code is now crystallizing a major confrontation in plenary session.
In a particularly incisive speech, the opposition MP argued that the bill under discussion did not concern the general interest of the Senegalese people, but rather targeted a specific political situation. "This proposed law only concerns Sonko out of the 18 million Senegalese," he asserted, directly referring to the former leader of Pastef. He criticized the accelerated legislative process, which he deemed incomprehensible, denouncing a haste that ignored the ongoing institutional discussions at the Ministry of the Interior.
A process deemed opaque
The parliamentarian believes the majority's approach lacks transparency and consultation. Describing the initiative as "bordering on shameful," he questioned the way this reform was handled within Parliament. He argues that essential legislative priorities have been deliberately sidelined, notably the revision of the amnesty law, which he considers crucial in the current political climate.
The legal aspect enters the debate
On a more sensitive note, Thierno Alassane Sall also brought up past legal cases, calling for clarification of certain procedures. According to him, new evidence should lead to a reassessment of the so-called "Sweet Beauté" case, challenging the judicial authorities on the rigor of the handling of this case. He also requested increased vigilance from financial oversight bodies regarding other ongoing cases.
Beyond the legal issues, the MP concluded by accusing the parliamentary majority of abusing its power. Asserting that decisions are being imposed without genuine democratic debate, he launched a direct attack on his colleagues in power: "You are a majority that is crushing democracy." This statement confirms the climate of complete breakdown that now exists between the parliamentary blocs regarding the reform of the Electoral Code.
