Retour annoncé de Macky Sall: Boubacar Seye et le Collectif des victimes exigent des comptes
The Collective of Victims of Macky Sall's Regime has reacted to the former head of state's announced return to Dakar, scheduled for July 17, as part of his campaign for a high-ranking position within the United Nations. In a statement signed by Boubacar Seye, the organization asserts that this visit cannot be separated from the families of victims of violence that occurred under his regime and their expectations of truth and justice.
"This visit cannot be a simple return to the country nor an ordinary step in an international campaign. It comes at a time when many questions remain about the tragic events that marked the last years of his power and that cost the lives of several Senegalese citizens," the Collective states.
According to Mr. Seye, while Macky Sall is now seeking the trust of the international community, the victims are still waiting for "the full truth to be revealed about the violence, arrests, detentions and suffering that have deeply affected hundreds of families across the country."
The Collective also believes that the former president's international ambitions should not overshadow the victims' demands. "No international ambition, however prestigious, should make us forget the duty of truth and justice. Before honors, there are the victims. Before international responsibilities, there are the families who have been demanding for years that those responsible be held accountable," the statement emphasizes.
The organization further stated that the July 17th event "should not only be about an international bid. It must also be about remembrance, truth, and the respect due to the victims." It believes that the Senegalese people and the international community have the right to know whether all the unanswered questions surrounding this period have been clarified.
The Collective reaffirms its commitment to the rule of law and calls on the justice system to continue its work "in complete independence so that the truth is established and the victims finally obtain the recognition and reparation they aspire to."
“Without truth, there can be no sincere reconciliation. Without justice, there can be no lasting peace. On July 17, the victims will not demand privilege or revenge. They will simply ask for what no democracy should deny its citizens: truth and justice,” they finally pleaded.
