"Si vous licenciez Ousmane Sonko..." : Un député PASTEF menace Bassirou Diomaye Faye
The prospect of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko's potential dismissal continues to fuel political tensions at the highest levels of government. In a particularly aggressive statement during the plenary session on Friday, May 8, 2026, MP Abdourahmane Diouf issued a direct warning to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, threatening to paralyze government action.
"If you were to dismiss Ousmane Sonko, we would bring motions of censure against every Prime Minister you bring to the National Assembly," the parliamentarian stated firmly.
A threat of institutional paralysis
Through this statement, the MP emphasizes the strength of the parliamentary majority resulting from the recent legislative elections. According to him, the President of the Republic cannot ignore the political reality that places Ousmane Sonko at the heart of the legislative process.
“You made a mistake in thinking you could dismiss the Prime Minister simply because you hold the appointment decree,” he asserted. For Abdourahmane Diouf, the legitimacy of the head of government stems as much from his institutional role as from his electoral base. The MP also linked the stability of the regime to the presence of the PASTEF leader at the Prime Minister's office: “As long as you are in power, Ousmane Sonko will be Prime Minister if he so desires.”
He emphasized that the Prime Minister has a solid majority, capable of overthrowing any government appointed without his political approval: "Don't forget that this man ran in the legislative elections and holds a majority in the National Assembly."
The specter of a legislative showdown
The threat brandished by the MP opens the door to a potential showdown between the Presidency and the National Assembly. In the Senegalese political system, a motion of no confidence is the ultimate weapon allowing MPs to bring down the government. By announcing systematic motions against any potential successor, Abdourahmane Diouf signals that a significant portion of the majority considers the Prime Minister to be the linchpin of the current balance of power.
The parliamentarian concluded his speech with an unequivocal warning to the head of state: "If you forget why you are in power, we will remind you through our actions."
