Suite au défilé de Thiès, Thierno Bocoum réagit : « Après la fête, la réalité ne défile pas »
The president of the Agir-Les Leaders movement, Thierno Bocoum, published a text just after the parade on April 4 in Thiès, the host city for the celebration of the 66th anniversary of Senegal's independence.
He began by praising "Idrissa Seck's forward-thinking vision and the lasting impact he has had on the city of Thiès." He then congratulated Mayor Babacar Diop for "his sincere commitment to the success of the event."
Thierno Bocoum declared that the current authorities have chosen "to profit from a legacy rather than to complete it, depriving Thiès, in his opinion, of its potential to become a true relay for Dakar and a breath of fresh air for national balance."
According to him, the city "has wasted precious time on political maneuvering and a lack of political will." "Yet, this city represents a major strategic opportunity for Senegal. The path is already laid out. Its completion would help rebalance demographic trends and contribute to decongesting a capital city in search of new spaces. Other regions must follow this same logic, so that population growth is accompanied by real economic opportunities, the satisfaction of basic needs, and a strengthened digital environment, facilitating access to services and data without the need for travel," he stated.
The president of AGIR points out that 2026 could have been a pivotal year, a pre-completion year (N-1), dedicated to finalizing major infrastructure projects and redefining the priorities of a city in constant flux. “Unfortunately, the current regime is revealing its limitations here, preferring to pursue a strategy of reclamation in the name of a supposed continuity of power. A continuity in appropriating existing gains, rather than in effort and transformation. Thiès will recover, just like the many other cities relegated to the sidelines, sacrificed for the sake of an unbalanced development model. Faced with a centralized system that concentrates wealth and opportunities, Senegal is currently shaping the contours of a future oil and gas giant with feet of clay,” he continues.
But, he said, the future belongs to territories that organize themselves, to cities that resist, and to populations that refuse to be abandoned.
Thierno Bocoum concluded: “Thiès witnessed a spectacle of prestige and symbolism. But starting tomorrow, its own difficulties will resume their relentless march. After the celebration, reality doesn't parade by. It imposes itself, heavy, persistent, and overwhelming. No population deserves this reality.”
