Tensions entre Diomaye Faye et Ousmane Sonko : L'Apr appelle à une mobilisation générale

The Alliance for the Republic (APR) has called on members of civil society, unions, youth, economic actors, and political parties to mobilize to preserve Senegal, at this time marked by disputes between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko. The APR also announced its support for opposition members of parliament who have filed an appeal with the Constitutional Council seeking the reinstatement of Ousmane Sonko to the National Assembly and his election as Speaker. The full text of the statement from the APR's Executive Secretariat (SEN) is below.

"PRESS RELEASE FROM THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE SECRETARIAT OF THE ALLIANCE FOR THE REPUBLIC (APR)"

The National Executive Secretariat (SEN) of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) expresses its deep concern about the major political crisis that is currently shaking the top of the State and which reveals the manifest failure of the political project carried out by the Pastef regime.

Barely two years after coming to power, the ruling coalition is exposing its internal divisions, power struggles and structural contradictions to the eyes of the Senegalese people and the international community.

Personal ambitions clearly seem to be taking precedence over the requirements of the state and the legitimate expectations of citizens.

The Nation is helplessly witnessing a battle for positioning between the main leaders of the regime, at the very moment when our country is facing unprecedented economic, social and financial challenges.

While households are experiencing a continuous decline in their purchasing power, businesses are struggling to invest, unemployment is hitting young people hard and public finances are causing serious concern, the government is devoting most of its energy to managing its internal conflicts, leadership and precedence with the 2029 presidential election in mind.

Thus, after more than twenty-four months of operation, the conclusion is undeniable:

a governance marked by improvisation;

a short-sighted management of the national economy;

the absence of structural reforms;

political communication based on slogans rather than results;

a recurring instrumentalization of institutions for partisan purposes;

a persistent desire to govern through confrontation and the designation of scapegoats.

The recent government reshuffle cannot mask this reality.

The government led by Mr. Al Aminou Lo appears more as an attempt to manage an internal political crisis than as a response to the difficulties faced by the Senegalese people.

Since the same causes produce the same effects, nothing in this new configuration allows us to hope for the recovery of government action weakened by personal rivalries, ideological contradictions and the absence of a coherent vision for the country.

The APR believes that Senegal cannot sustainably bear the consequences of the political instability created by those who had promised a break with the past, transparency and efficiency.

Faced with this worrying situation, the Alliance for the Republic calls on all the vital forces of the Nation — political parties, civil society organizations, economic actors, trade unions, youth and women's movements — to mobilize to preserve:

the stability and credibility of the institutions of the Republic;

democratic achievements and the rule of law;

public and individual freedoms;

legal and economic security;

Senegal's international credibility.

Senegal deserves better than personal squabbles, power rivalries and political maneuvering.

The time for broken promises and communication tricks is over.

Senegal cannot be governed sustainably by the rivalries of a tandem that has broken down in trust, absorbed by its own internal conflicts and lacking strategic direction.

The time has therefore come for a republican resurgence, for the defense of the higher interests of the Nation and for the construction of a credible, responsible and unifying alternative.

Furthermore, the National Executive Secretariat of the APR announces its unreserved support for the appeal filed with the Constitutional Council by opposition members of parliament against what appears to be one of the most serious breaches of republican legality since the advent of the 2024 transition. The APR believes that respect for the Constitution and the laws that govern our Republic cannot be subordinated to the political interests of the moment or to the internal arrangements of a ruling party already in disarray.

The Alliance for the Republic reaffirms its determination to pursue, in respect of democratic principles, the fight for the safeguarding of our institutions, the protection of freedoms and the return of governance based on competence, experience and a sense of the State.

Consequently, the National Executive Secretariat is launching a general mobilization appeal to all political leaders, elected officials, party officials, and activists, urging them to resume activities at their respective grassroots levels without delay in order to finalize, before mid-July 2026, the restructuring and revitalization of the Local Executive Secretariats. This is an essential condition for strengthening our local presence and regaining public trust. The National Executive Secretariat also invites all leaders to actively support the initiatives of the Front for the Defense of the Republic (FDR) aimed at uniting the nation's vital forces around a credible alternative project.

Faced with the disappointments caused by the current exercise of power, the APR intends to participate in the construction of a national dynamic capable of offering Senegalese people a new perspective based on competence, justice, economic progress and institutional stability.
