Thierno Alassane Sall : « Ousmane Sonko utilise le perchoir pour installer sa dictature »
The coordinator of the independent members of parliament, Thierno Alassane Sall, strongly criticized the way in which the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, is conducting parliamentary business. During a press conference organized by opposition MPs following the incidents that occurred during the review of the Constitution, he painted what he considered an alarming picture of the state of Senegalese democracy.
According to him, the signs of this "drift" appeared as soon as Ousmane Sonko took office. He claims that he himself was prevented from speaking during a session after raising a point of order. "Ousmane Sonko began his dictatorship as soon as he took office. I raised a point of order, but I was never given the floor," the MP stated.
Returning to the session dedicated to the constitutional revision, Thierno Alassane Sall believes that the text was officially intended to strengthen the powers of the National Assembly. But, according to him, events have revealed a very different reality. "They wanted to give more power to the National Assembly. In reality, we have understood that the chamber is reduced to a single person. Democracy is collapsing under Pastef," he declared.
The MP also stated that, even within the majority, some elected officials had acknowledged that the rules of procedure granted Abdou Mbow the right to speak again. He specifically cited MP Guy Marius Sagna, who, according to him, had brought this provision to the attention of the Speaker of the Assembly. Other parliamentarians reportedly told him that they had wanted to request a suspension of the session to correct this procedural error, but without success.
For Thierno Alassane Sall, the refusal to follow parliamentary rules constitutes a serious attack on the institutions. "The Charter of the Republic has been violated. The Pastef deputies have chosen to disregard the Republic in the face of a single man who imposes his will," he argued.
Continuing his indictment, he accused Ousmane Sonko of wanting to concentrate even more power in his own hands. Referring to his departure from the prime ministership, he asserted that the former head of government was already seeking, in his view, to obtain "tailor-made" rules and would now attempt to exert the same influence as head of the National Assembly.
He also denounced the use of emergency procedures to push through the constitutional amendment before June 30, arguing that this "forced" approach further weakens the institutions. He also criticized the majority for not having read the President of the Republic's opinion during the examination of the bill, including in committee.
Finally, Thierno Alassane Sall criticized the attitude of the head of state, whom he accuses of turning a blind eye. "The President of the Republic is letting things happen. He shares power with Ousmane Sonko and they are running the country together," he declared.
Believing that institutional appeals have not yielded a response, he has called on civil society, magistrates, intellectuals and all the vital forces of the country to mobilize, in his view, to preserve Senegalese democracy.
