During the cabinet meeting held yesterday, Wednesday, May 6, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye spoke about social dialogue, the follow-up to union grievances, and the modernization of labor law in Senegal.
The Head of State recalled having received, "on April 27, 2026, the 2025 report on the state of Social Dialogue", then, "on May 1, 2026, in the presence of members of the Government, the grievance books of the trade union federations".
He took the opportunity to congratulate, on the occasion of Labour Day, all the workers of Senegal for their contribution to national development and the well-being of the population.
In the same vein, he asked "the Prime Minister, the Minister in charge of Labour and the Civil Service and each minister, to diligently examine the grievances of the trade union federations falling within their remit and the sectors under their responsibility".
Diomaye Faye welcomed the adoption of the draft Labour Code and Social Security Code, which he presented as a major step forward in Senegalese social legislation.
A social dialogue committee will be established in each ministry before the end of June 2026.
"He praises the sense of responsibility of the trade unions and employers and asks the Government to ensure the preventive monitoring of the implementation of the commitments of the Social Stability Pact for inclusive and sustainable growth," reads the statement from the Council of Ministers.
Regarding employment and structural reforms, the President asked "the Prime Minister to initiate the implementation, without delay, of the new National Employment Policy, to ensure continuous monitoring of the deployment of the National State-Private Employers Convention and to accelerate consultations on the modernization of the pension system and the reform of the remuneration system in the public and semi-public sectors."
In between, the Head of State stressed the finalization of the ratification process of Convention No. 190 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) on violence and harassment in the workplace, as well as the establishment, before the end of June 2026, of a Social Dialogue Committee in each ministry and the adoption of the draft law relating to social protection.
