"Un Premier ministre prend des décisions sans permission" : Sonko revendique une capacité d'initiative pleine et entière
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko addressed the National Assembly on Friday, May 22, 2026, to clarify the nature of his working relationship with the President of the Republic, emphatically stating that any disagreements at the highest levels of government do not in any way undermine the regular functioning of the Executive branch. In a closely watched address to the Assembly, the head of government stressed that internal political disagreements should be viewed as normal and healthy elements of the institutional process. "Disputes within the state are not resolved by decrees," he argued. Sonko reiterated that, according to his understanding of the role, a Prime Minister should not be limited to the mechanical execution of presidential decisions, but must actively participate in shaping public policy. "A Prime Minister who respects himself does not simply carry out orders. He makes decisions without permission," he declared from the podium.
Internal regulation of tensions to accelerate reforms
The Prime Minister also addressed the methodology for managing internal disagreements within the government, stating that they must be resolved within a confidential and internal framework of consultation. "Our difficulties and differences are settled internally. The truth always prevails," he added, reassuring the National Assembly. Ousmane Sonko firmly rejected the idea that these lively discussions could weaken the state apparatus or cause any institutional gridlock.
According to him, the media and political speculation surrounding a deep leadership conflict between the President and the Prime Minister's office is solely aimed at creating artificial political divisions to destabilize the majority. "Those who say this are painting a shaky picture of the President. They are doing everything they can to separate the President from the Prime Minister," he denounced, implicitly targeting certain factions within the opposition.
The Prime Minister concluded his remarks by emphasizing that this constructive dialogue in no way diminishes administrative efficiency. "These differences do not impact our work, especially in the core functions of the State. On the contrary, they accelerate progress," he stated definitively.
