Église Catholique : Mgr Augustin Simmel Ndiaye prend les rênes du Cinpec
The National Interdiocesan Committee for Catholic Pilgrimages (CINPEC) is changing leadership. Bishop Augustin Simmel Ndiaye of Saint-Louis succeeds Bishop Paul Abel Mamba as president of the institution. Meeting in a statutory session in Rufisque, the members of CINPEC formalized this historic handover. After more than ten years of service, Bishop Paul Abel Mamba, recently elected president of the Regional Episcopal Conference (Senegal, Mauritania, Cape Verde, and Guinea-Bissau), wished to step down from this position. The new head of the Catholic pilgrimage is Bishop Augustin Simmel Ndiaye, who will be ordained Bishop of Saint-Louis in July 2025. To ensure a smooth transition and best prepare the 2026 pilgrimage to the holy sites of Christendom, Bishop Mamba will mentor his successor for a year.
Challenges and recommendations for the future
In his farewell address, Bishop Paul Abel Mamba shared several strategic directions for the institution's long-term sustainability. He emphasized the need to protect the Cinpec, which he considers a "national intangible heritage." The outgoing bishop advocated for the complete digitization of registrations. The goal is to facilitate access for the faithful living within the country and to ensure greater transparency. He urged Christians not to transform the pilgrimage into a "religious tourism agency," advising against multiple departures that hinder access for new participants. A call was made to provide the organization with more spacious and welcoming offices. Bishop Mamba concluded by paying tribute to his colleagues and thanking the State of Senegal for its constant logistical and financial support. He also commended the fruitful cooperation with the embassies of Israel and Italy in facilitating the issuance of visas.
