Dr Safiétou Thiam: « Les personnes sous traitement efficace ne transmettent pas le VIH »

The so-called "Pape Cheikh Diallo and Co." case has sparked strong emotions within Senegalese society. Following the announcement that some of the individuals named in the case, some of whom have families, were HIV-positive, numerous questions have arisen, particularly concerning the health of their spouses and children. However, science provides precise answers about the realities of living with the virus today.

It is now rigorously demonstrated that a person living with HIV who is on effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) no longer transmits the virus. When the viral load—that is, the amount of virus in the blood—is maintained at an undetectable level for at least six months, the risk of sexual transmission becomes zero. This major scientific breakthrough, summarized by the international concept "Undetectable = Untransmittable" (U=U), was confirmed by Dr. Safiétou Thiam, an HIV/AIDS specialist and Executive Secretary of the National AIDS Control Program (CNLS).

According to the doctor, the disease becomes untransmissible through sexual contact once the viral load is controlled, even in the case of unprotected sex. She specifies, however, that to maintain this level of safety and guarantee an undetectable viral load, it is imperative for the patient to strictly adhere to their daily antiretroviral treatment. This rigorous adherence not only allows the patient to lead a normal life and have healthy children, but it also constitutes a powerful prevention tool for society as a whole.

By clarifying these technical points, Dr. Safiétou Thiam encourages a more serene and less stigmatizing understanding of the situation. She reminds us that science now makes it possible to break the chain of transmission, provided that medical monitoring is regular and treatment is administered correctly.
