Régulation des médias au Sénégal - réaction APR

The Alliance for the Republic (APR) has reacted to the decision rendered on April 8, 2026, by the Constitutional Council of Senegal, which struck down several provisions of the law establishing and organizing the National Media Regulatory Council (CNRM). In a statement from its National Executive Secretariat, the party welcomed a decision it considers "of great symbolic importance," believing that it puts an end to provisions "clearly infringing upon freedom of expression and the rights of journalists and media professionals."

The APR also congratulates the MPs from the Takku Wallu group as well as those from the non-affiliated group, who filed the appeal with the Constitutional Court, which it considers to have acted "in accordance with their mandate to defend freedoms and preserve the rule of law".

According to the party, this decision serves as a strong reminder of the Constitution's role in protecting press freedom and citizens' right to information. The APR also accuses the current government of having attempted to "financially stifle the press" and "imprison journalists, before seeking to completely annihilate freedom of information."

Virulent criticism of the government

On the political front, the APR calls on the Minister of Communication to "cease the harassment of private media" and to guarantee free and independent working conditions for information professionals.

Addressing the economic situation, the party is equally critical. Referring to the Prime Minister's statements of April 4, 2026, it believes that the government "has no solution to alleviate the suffering of the people" facing a difficult daily life.

The APR denounces a "violent austerity policy" which, it argues, will particularly affect young people, women, rural populations, and retirees. It also criticizes an economic strategy it describes as "fiscal harassment," characterized by increased pressure on economic actors in the absence of any structural projects. The party further condemns what it describes as a management style marked by "opulence, waste, cronyism, and the use of state resources for propaganda purposes."

In this context, the APR reaffirms its solidarity with the unions and social forces engaged in struggle, and urges the government to "immediately address the concerns of workers." It also demands the release of "political prisoners" and calls on the nation's vital forces to "strengthen unity and mobilization" in the face of what it describes as an "incompetent and repressive government."
