Saint-Louis : 126 candidats à l’émigration irrégulière secourus après huit jours d’errance en mer
The Saint-Louis Territorial Brigade rescued 126 candidates for irregular emigration after their pirogue ran aground near Hydrobase, in the commune of Gandon.
According to information provided by Colonel Ibrahima Ndiaye, the gendarmerie was notified on Monday, June 1, 2026, of a pirogue in distress carrying migrants. An intervention was immediately launched by the Saint-Louis Territorial Brigade with support from the Saint-Louis 1 Surveillance and Intervention Squadron (ESI) and a patrol from the National Navy's Northern Naval Base.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 126 individuals attempting irregular migration, including 87 Senegalese, 28 Malians, 6 Gambians, and 5 Guineans from Conakry. Among the latter were a woman and her four-year-old child.
Security forces also seized a 60 HP Yamaha engine, thirteen jerrycans of fuel, a motor pump and a damaged dugout canoe.
Initial investigations reveal that the migrants left Djiffer Island, in the Fatick region, on the night of May 24, 2026. After eight days at sea, they found themselves in Mauritanian waters, unable to continue their journey due to adverse weather conditions. Each passenger reportedly paid between 200,000 and 600,000 CFA francs for the crossing.
The captain of the pirogue and his first mate have been identified and taken into custody for migrant smuggling. The investigation is ongoing to determine all the ramifications of this irregular migration operation.
