Sonko sur le Mfdc : «Ce n'est plus une affaire d'indépendance, mais de culture de cannabis…»
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko performed his Korité prayer this Saturday in Ziguinchor. Upon leaving the mosque in the HLM Néma neighborhood, he addressed the media, speaking on the Casamance issue and taking a firm stance.
“During the Bignona rally in 2019, when I was a presidential candidate, I reiterated that if we are elected, we cannot tolerate any exceptional zone in Senegal. Not a single centimeter of Senegalese territory will constitute an exception, and we will give ourselves every means. Our wish is to put an end to this story as soon as possible, but through negotiation, consensus, and peace,” he stated.
Regarding the discussions, the head of government gave an update: "We are very far along with certain factions. I myself went to Bissau to initial an agreement. And in that area, everything is calm. We encourage them to continue in this direction, to get out of this situation, to return to civilian life."
Sonko was keen to assure them of the State's support. He even stated that measures had been taken regarding civil registration to obtain the necessary documents for the fighters and their families, while also assisting them with their reintegration.
For Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, those who have not laid down their arms today are driven by something other than independence issues: "Overall, it has become residual. And it is no longer a matter of independence, it is a matter of cannabis cultivation. In its sweeps, the army is not facing irredentist claims, they are facing areas dedicated to cannabis cultivation, the harvest of which is currently wreaking havoc on the populations of Casamance and Senegal," laments the Prime Minister.
On this issue, the Prime Minister emphasizes that a responsible state cannot accept this. He states that it is a matter of public health: "And we will continue to instruct our defense and security forces, as well as the national army, to do the necessary work in all areas where these crops are grown, so that we do not have sanctuaries dedicated to these illicit and dangerous crops," he specifies.
