Anderlecht : Ilay Camara invite la Belgique à mieux gérer les binationaux
A Senegalese international since March 2025, Ilay Camara reflects on his international career choice and challenges Belgium on the management of dual-nationality players.

The debate surrounding dual nationals remains heated in Belgium. The latest example is the case of Jorthy Mokio, who opted to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo, which resurfaced on May 1st. In this context, the versatile RSC Anderlecht full-back officially changed his sporting nationality to Senegal, after having played for Belgium's youth teams.
In an interview with Het Nieuwsblad and La Dernière Heure, the player explained that this choice was primarily driven by his heart. "I had chosen Senegal a long time ago. It was a way to make my father and my sister, who was born in Senegal, proud," he confided. He also mentioned a frustrating episode during a trip to the Czech Republic, where he was not used, despite good performances for Standard Liège.
Beyond his own situation, Ilay Camara is calling on Belgian officials to reconsider their approach. "Belgium needs to better manage the cases of dual nationals," he believes, citing several recent examples: Konstantinos Karetsas, who chose Greece; Noah Sadiki, who opted for Congo; and Rayane Bounida and Zakaria El Ouahdi, who chose Morocco. "No one tried to convince me to play for Belgium, even though the full-back position isn't very well-stocked," he laments.
A clear message addressed to the Belgian federation, in a context of increased competition between nations to attract talent from the diaspora.
