Balogun: la fédération brésilienne défend "l'intégrité" de son arbitre mis en cause par Trump
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on Monday defended the "integrity" of Brazilian referee Raphael Claus, who was criticized by Donald Trump for his red card, which was ultimately suspended by FIFA, given to American striker Folarin Balogun.
"The CBF refutes any insinuation that casts doubt on the integrity of Raphael Claus," an "exemplary professional," the federation said in a statement sent to AFP, regarding the man whom Mr. Trump deemed "horrible" and "very dubious."
Raphael Claus, 46, "is recognized worldwide as one of the best active referees, with a career marked by technical excellence, ethical behavior and absolute respect for football," added the CBF.
AS Monaco striker Balogun was sent off by the Brazilian referee during the round of 16 match against Bosnia-Herzegovina last Wednesday, for stepping on the leg of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic.
This red card was supposed to deprive "Team USA" of its top scorer for Monday's round of 16 match against Belgium.
But his suspension was lifted, albeit suspended, by FIFA's disciplinary committee, following intervention by Donald Trump. This unprecedented decision sparked outrage.
On Monday, the US president confirmed that he had called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to "request a review" of Balogun's red card.
The questioning of the Brazilian referee adds to a series of disputes between the United States under Donald Trump and the government of left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, particularly in the commercial field.
