CAF : le CHAN disparaît, place à une Ligue des Nations africaine
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed the cancellation of the African Nations Championship (CHAN). The announcement was made this Saturday by the president of the continental body, Patrice Motsepe, thus ending this competition reserved exclusively for players competing in their domestic leagues.
According to the head of African football, this decision is part of a broader effort to fundamentally reform the competition calendar on the continent. "Our mission is to make decisions that serve the interests of African football," said Patrice Motsepe, specifically mentioning the new format of the Africa Cup of Nations, now held every four years.
The South African leader also addressed the economic difficulties associated with organizing the CHAN. "The CHAN is a spectacle that costs us money. With the establishment of the African Nations League every year, there will no longer be a need for this competition," he explained.
As a replacement, CAF will launch an African Nations League, bringing together its 54 member federations. This new competition will take place during FIFA international windows, with matches organized by geographical zone. The winning teams from each zone will then compete in a final tournament to determine the continental champion.
This reform marks a major turning point in the organization of African competitions and could redefine the dynamics of football on the continent, while offering more competitive matches for national teams.
