CAF–UEFA : Vers une participation des équipes africaines aux compétitions de jeunes européennes
A new milestone has been reached in the relationship between the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and UEFA. On Wednesday, the two organizations formalized a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening their cooperation until 2031, on the sidelines of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver. Signed by Patrice Motsepe and Aleksander Ceferin, this partnership covers several key areas, with a particular focus on youth football development.
The main innovation lies in the potential opening of UEFA youth competitions to certain African national teams. Eventually, teams from CAF member federations could participate in tournaments organized jointly with their European counterparts. A principle of reciprocity is also being considered, with the integration of European teams into African initiatives, such as the Pan-African School Championship.
A first experiment has already taken place with a U16 tournament recently held in Serbia. Invited for the occasion, the Democratic Republic of Congo nevertheless encountered serious difficulties. Deprived of some of its players and coaching staff due to administrative reasons, the Congolese team suffered heavy defeats against Belarus, Serbia, and Switzerland. This experience highlights the logistical and organizational challenges associated with this type of initiative.
By increasing opportunities for young African and European talents to meet and compete, CAF hopes to accelerate the development of its players and strengthen the competitiveness of its national teams. The partnership also includes initiatives in coach training, refereeing, and governance, with joint educational programs.
