CAN 2025 / Achraf : « Je ne suis pas fier de l’image que nous avons projetée avec les serviettes »
The Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal continues to generate controversy. And not just in the courts: Senegal has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision to award the title to Morocco.
Achraf Hakimi, captain of the "Atlas Lions", addressed the decision and all the controversy surrounding the final on "Movistar", after Paris Saint-Germain beat Liverpool (2-0) in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
“These are difficult times, the tension is palpable on the pitch. I’m not proud of the image we gave with the towels. Despite that, the team’s performance in the competition was good. We respected our opponent, the tournament…” said the former Real Madrid youth player.
The full-back, however, condemned Senegal's behavior and expressed his support for the CAF's decision to award the title to Morocco: "They are assessing the measures to be taken, and we hope that a decision will be made in the interest of football and Africa. We hope to win, because we deserve it and we cannot leave a pitch in such a state."
"When they think we're dead... we're more alive than ever."
The former Inter and Borussia Dortmund player, however, expressed his disappointment with the narrow margin of victory that, in his opinion, PSG achieved against Liverpool: "After the clear chances we created, we are a little frustrated not to have obtained a bigger advantage, but happy with the work of the whole team."
