CAN 2025 / Équipe du Sénégal : des errements persistants à corriger d’urgence
The Senegalese national team continues to display an overall attractive style of play, but is still struggling to translate its dominance into truly convincing results. In recent matches, particularly at the start of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, certain shortcomings have resurfaced with increasing frequency and are now proving to be significant obstacles to the Lions' progress.
The match played in Kinshasa against the Democratic Republic of Congo during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers served as a warning. Senegal, despite dominating possession, were caught off guard twice before turning the game around. A nearly identical scenario unfolded on Saturday against the same DRC team in the second match of Group D in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Dominating the match, Senegal created several clear-cut chances, particularly in the first half, but failed to put the game to bed. This inability to make the difference early on allowed the opposition to stay in the game and left the team vulnerable to unfavorable outcomes. In modern football, territorial control and skillful passing combinations are no longer enough if they aren't rewarded with goals.
However, the quality of their play shouldn't be dismissed. The Lions manage to create chances, proving that their understanding and passing patterns are working. Of course, creating opportunities means that their combinations are effective. But at this level of competition, finishing in front of goal remains the deciding factor. Scoring is what allows you to win, secure your position, and manage periods of pressure more calmly.
This offensive inefficiency is compounded by costly individual errors. Last Saturday, the goal conceded against Congo in the 61st minute punished a moment of defensive lapse, revealing a lack of concentration or discipline. These errors, often isolated but decisive, weaken the entire team and call into question the efforts made over long periods of play.
In this situation, the lack of clinical finishing from some attacking players is also a concern. Nicolas Jackson and Ismaïla Sarr, while valuable for their movement and work rate, are going through a difficult period in front of goal for the national team. Their ineffectiveness poses a real balance problem, as it prevents the team from capitalizing on its dominance. The question of a change in player profile or increased competition for places is a legitimate one.
Facing Benin this Tuesday, Pape Thiaw is expected to make some tough decisions. Tactical and personnel adjustments are necessary to correct these mistakes. This could involve a different attacking approach, a greater presence in the opposition's penalty area, or better management of periods of dominance in the first half.
Senegal has the potential and experience to turn things around. But to continue progressing smoothly in this competition, the Lions will need to show more pragmatism, focus, and maturity. Against Benin, it won't just be a matter of playing well, but above all, of making the difference quickly and without putting themselves in unnecessary danger.

Pape Thiaw tenait son équipe type au sortir du match contre l’Angleterre avec ce 4-3-3. Son entêtement à vouloir coûte que coûte réintégrer Mané comme titulaire lui fait tout perdre et risque maintenant de lui coûter son poste de sélectionneur. D’abord la défaite contre le Brésil où il nous l’impose en pointe et maintenant le match nul contre la RDC synonyme d'élimination du Sénégal à la CAN. Si Pape Thiaw insiste aussi sur Mané à la coupe du monde, on aura que des défaites. Je ne suis pas contre qu’il le titularise mais alors dans ce cas, il ne devra jouer qu’un seul mi-temps comme ce fut le cas aujourd'hui pour Mahrez avec l’Algérie. Le problème de Pape Thiaw, c’est avant tout un problème de djiko sénégalais c’est à dire Masla - nakhanté et peur de prendre ses responsabilités. Même Gana avait perdu sa place dans cette équipe mais il a tapé du point sur la table et Pape l’a remis. Même Mendy aurait dû perdre sa place de titulaire au profit de Yehvane Diouf après notre défaite contre le Brésil. On peut jouer avec les vieux pour leur expérience mais il faut qu’ils aillent au banc à chaque fois qu’ils font une grosse erreur ou un mauvais match.
Lors des 1éres minutes de la 2nde mi-temps avant le but congolais, il est le seul à ne pas remarquer que l'équipe devenait nonchalante et son jeu stéréotypé, et que les congolais ont pris du poil de la bête. Alors qu'il devrait réagir pour, au moins, revoir le milieu de terrain (s'il a le complexe de changer un des attaquants), il a fallu que l'adversaire marque pour qu'il se convainc qu'il peut faire des changements, comme s'il se disait là j'ai l'occasion de sortir ceux que devrais sortir depuis longtemps mais que j'osais pas les frustrer.
Maintenant, Pape doit comprendre qu'il a amené 28 joueurs qui nous sont enviés par le monde entier, (dont les quatre sont pris en charge par le sénégal-même, afin de lui oter toute pression et avoir un groupe complet, compétitif et interchangeable), il peut faire cinq changements durant un match: ce qui signifie que le Sénégal peut élever le jeu durant 90mn sans baisser le tempo avec les joueurs sont il dispose, mais alors!!!
