CAN 2025 : La liste probable des 27 joueurs de Pape Thiaw

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco just a few months away, coach Pape Thiaw had finalized his squad for the tournament, down to the last few details. However, during the last international break, and with less than a month to go before the competition, the arrival of new players, notably Ibrahim Mbaye and Mamadou Sarr, as well as the return from injury of key players like Habib Diarra, have thrown everything into disarray. So, who will be the 27 players called up for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco? Seneweb takes a closer look and offers you, as a preview, Pape Thiaw's likely squad list.

In recent days, Pape Thiaw and his staff have held numerous meetings and discussions to finalize the details of the Lions' squad. The coach wants at least two key players for each position, as well as versatile players to allow for tactical changes during the tournament, if necessary. Some bold choices are expected in his 27-man squad.

In goal, there's less suspense. Edouard Mendy, Mory Diaw, and Yehvann Diouf will be the goalkeepers called up, as in recent months. The same goes for the left, where El Hadji Malick Diouf and Ismail Jakobs have become regulars. In central defense, however, Senegal has secured a significant boost with the addition of Mamadou Sarr (Strasbourg). He is expected to replace Abdou Diallo and Moustapha Mbow, who have frequently been selected in recent squads, in the 27-man roster. On the right, there's also a contest between Antoine Mendy, who started against Brazil, and Ilay Camara, who started against Kenya. Which of the two will partner Krépin Diatta? Camara seems to have the edge thanks to his versatility. He can play as a wing-back, allowing the coach to switch formations. He's also more attack-minded than both Krépin Diatta and Mendy, which could prove useful against teams with deep-lying defenses.

In midfield, a core group has emerged in recent months, but injuries to Lamine Camara and Habib Diarra have allowed players like Mouhamadou Lamine Camara, Rassoul Ndiaye, and Cheikh Niasse to join the squad. Camara has returned to action, while Habib Diarra is preparing for his return in the coming days. They should therefore be included in the squad, even if it means playing should Senegal reach the second round, as is the case for Habib Diarra.

However, Pape Thiaw faces more uncertainty in attack. How many strikers should he call up? How should he manage the situation with Ismaila Sarr and Cheikh Sabaly? Should he select Assane Diao? These are just some of the questions. What is certain is that the coach will have to make some tough choices, and recent matches seem to have already decided some of them.

27th player, the Joker

While Pape Thiaw usually selects 26 players (except for the last international break), he will have the option, for the Africa Cup of Nations, to call up a 27th player. This will be his wildcard. For this spot, the coach could bolster his attack, given the numerous candidates in contention, or strengthen the midfield. However, the most sensible choice would be to call up a third right-back, in this case Antoine Mendy. He could be a reliable option given Krépin Diatta's fragile fitness, and the Nice player is capable of playing in a three-man defense.
